Presenter: Julie Nelson, Therapeutic Preschool Teacher Families Together Program, Lifetrack Resources

Secure, nurturing, responsive relationships are at the center of healthy development, yet some children may have experienced disrupted, abusive or neglectful relationships. Training in education or social work continues to leave many professionals unprepared to meet the needs of highly stressed and traumatized young children. Whether it is an angry child throwing chairs, a fearful child running away, or a sad child who never joins in play, highly stressed children can create highly stressed settings and highly stressed teachers. This workshop will provide information to help teachers, advocates and caregivers understand and respond to hurting children at the level of underlying beliefs and emotions. Participants will increase their understanding of children’s behavior, relationship based intervention, responding to critical questions and supporting angry children.
